A workshop for students on EIT Health MTiH

Discovering the opportunities of the Master of Technological Innovation in Health (MTiH)

On Friday 5 October, the Master of Technological Innovation in Health (MTiH) held its first workshop for students at the Polytechnic University of Madrid (UPM).

Students from all five partner universities involved in the MTiH programme (Sorbonne University, UPM, University Grenoble Alp, Lisbon University and Barcelona University) participated in this workshop to learn more about the opportunities offered by the EIT Health MTiH Master programme, in terms of innovation and entrepreneurship skills applied to healthcare and students’ international mobility in both academic and industrial contexts.

The meeting, which brought together 150 students – 50 of which connected via live streaming at partner universities – included presentations on innovation and entrepreneurship in health technology from three start-up companies supported by EIT Health:

ABLE, SPOTLAB, and WIVI and from UPM Innovation Partnerships Director Professor Gonzalo León, and EIT Health Education Director Dr. Ursula Mühle.

MTiH students who already completed their mobility semester in one of the five partner universities presented their experience of studying abroad as part of the MTiH programme. Martin Boutiere, a Grenoble university student who spent one semester in Barcelona explained:

“The MTiH enabled me to study in Barcelona to improve my knowledge of innovation and to experience new learning methods. After my Master I am going to do a PhD to continue to work on the development of entrepreneurial skills. I want to develop my own project and company in the field of biomedical engineering”.

MTiH student posters were also an opportunity to present students’ projects and achievements as part of their Master thesis which involves a compulsory internship and close collaboration with industrial partners. Noelia Antón Santos, a MTiH student from UPM who spent a semester in Grenoble in 2018 commented: “Thanks to the learning-by-doing methodology used in our courses, we learned to develop our own project ideas”.

The Master of Technological Innovation in Health (MTiH) is a Master programme funded by EIT Health. It offers a transdisciplinary and holistic approach to Biomedical and Health Engineering. The Master is implemented in five universities since September 2017. In 2018 it received the EIT Label, a certificate of quality for Master and Doctoral programmes that combine excellent scientific education with innovation and entrepreneurship training.

EIT-Labelled degrees encourage innovative pedagogies and also incorporate mandatory mobility schemes for students. Graduates of EIT-Labelled degrees form the next generation of health innovators. Prospective students interested in the programme can apply at one of the five partner universities.
